APE Malaysia has been collaborating with AirAsia Foundation since 2016 to bring fire hoses to various wildlife centres in the region as it is an important material for wildlife welfare work. The key project objective is to create fire hose enrichment for the wildlife under the care of these centres to improve the state of their current welfare.
Over the years, we have been able to mobilise 5000 kg of fire hoses to six centres, and with the AirAsia AllStars, we were able to create more than 550 enrichment items for the various animals.
We would like to express our gratitude to Asian Tigers for providing storage for our fire hoses and assisting us during the packing!
The first Hammock Amok took place at Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme in Medan, Indonesia. 36 AirAsia staff joined us to build enrichment items for the orangutans over two days. The success of this first event paved the way for more Hammock Amok event happening over the years.
Hammock Amok Sandakan was organised at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). BSBCC is currently home to 43 rescued sun bears. We made 55 enrichment items out of 600kg of fire hoses that we brought over!
Hammock Amok Thailand was organised at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). WFFT was founded with the aim to rescue domesticated or captive wild animals. Since 2001, they’ve rescued orangutans, sun bears, macaques, elephants, otters and more! We made 61 enrichment items to benefit the wildlife living there.
Hammock Amok Jakarta was organised at Ragunan Zoo. With 10 centres around Indonesia participating, we were able to convert 2000 kg of fire hoses into more than 200 enrichment items!
Hammock Amok Lok Kawi was organised at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park in Kota Kinabalu. The wildlife park is home to wildlife rescued or confiscated by the Sabah Wildlife Department. Not only did we build enrichment, we also helped to repaint the sides of the enclosures.
Hammock Amok Vietnam was organised at Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Centre (HWRC). Although there are other rescue centres in Vietnam, HWRC is the only center that accepts all species of animals from all around Vietnam. With more than 600 kg of fire hoses, we created 73 enrichment for tigers, bears, gibbons and other wildlife at the center.
