Animal Projects & Environmental Education Sdn. Bhd. (APE) is a social enterprise that develops programmes in support of conservation projects in a sustainable manner. Our programmes are designed to be embedded within partner project sites and aim to benefit the environment, wildlife, animals and community of the area through monitored and measured conservation outcomes.
This is a key part of APE that is carried out through the improvement of wildlife welfare, both in captivity and in the wild. In captivity, we work with zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centres on enrichment and animal keeper training. In the wild, we work on habitat restoration and education within communities.
People are fundamental elements of conservation and animal welfare. Our aim is to actively engage local people in all our project sites whilst at the same time creating income opportunities which are not damaging to the environment.
A healthy environment is what we are aiming for both human and animals. We focus on reconnecting fragmented forest of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, establishing a continuous corridor for the diverse flora and fauna of this unique rainforest floodplain.

We don’t just run volunteering projects! We are currently assisting companies or groups by planting trees on their behalf in the Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah under the banner of ROAR co2. If you are interested in what we do and are looking for ways for your organization or company to be involved, do get in touch with us!
We have been utilising up-cycled fire hose as enrichment material in zoos and wildlife centers in Malaysia and a few South East Asian countries. It is used to make toys, hammock and swings for the animals to play with or rest in. The fire hose has been used to help animals in the urban environment to move around safely and reduce road kill. We also produce durable fire hose toys that you can purchase for you pets too
If you are unable to join our volunteer project but you want to help, you can! Purchase a sapling and we will plant it for you on our reforestation site at Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Santuary. You can also rock a new t-shirt that come in a few designs and colors. Check out our SHOP page to see what you like.
Each sapling you purchase will help to create and reconnect important forest corridors that will benefit the wildlife and support local communities for years to come. The trees will be planted by our team of locals at Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.
Act NowHoming on “pets for wildlife” as the theme, we are promoting the participation of pets in helping our wildlife and environment. For every pet toy that is purchased, the proceeds will be used to fund our animal welfare and habitat restoration projects.
Shop Now!One of the best things about this programme is that it really benefits the local community. I got immense satisfaction from the knowledge that I had come to Sabah and done a variety of activities that benefitted the local people.
Out of all my experiences last year, when people ask me what I would like to see again… I always say our trees… our little saplings… it’s one of those ‘before I die’ things… I want to see a wild orangutan in our trees!!!!!
“Each individual matters. If you wish to contribute a bit of goodness to wildlife and want to know more about sun bears, here’s definitely the place for it.”
“It’s very difficult to put into words how strongly I feel about this program. Every time we go out into the field to do some physical work for a few hours, it gives me a sense of empowerment. It feels really good to spring into action, connect with nature, learn about conservation and return home with a much better understanding of how it all works.”
Through this project, I get to know a lot of new people and also knowledge about the wildlife. The environment there is also really good for me and I had a lot of good memories with everyone and everything!
I can confirm that it has been the most amazing and rewarding experience of my life. I have never done anything like this and was scared that I wouldn’t be physically able to but everyone quickly made me feel less worried and comfortable.
Experiencing the outstanding beauty of both the wildlife and rainforest will stay with me forever.
My usual cynicism has been expelled and I feel we are contributing in a small way to the restoration of the “corridor of life”. A more sustainable balance between men and the environment.
“Great project. Unlike many other ‘volunteer’ experiences, the work we do here actually matters and actually makes a difference – volunteers feel useful! The staff, ALL the staff, are amazing, so dedicated and hardworking that really care about the bears. But they all still have fun and always so happy to help out and make us feel welcome. The centre is itself is just incredible. Feel so privileged to have been a part of it.”
“We thoroughly enjoyed helping connect the broken fragments of Borneo rain forest desperately needed by the orangutan, sun bear, clouded leopard as well as other important animal and plant species by planting flowering mega-trees which the support the regeneration of this ancient rain forest. It feels wonderful to partake in such an important component of human existence and responsibility”
The only way to make this happen is to make action!
Come join us and together we make the world a better place
