SUN BEAR ASSISTANT
ENRICHMENT, SUN BEAR, WILDLIFE
Spend 2 or 4 weeks at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre where you’ll be working closely with the keepers to carry out husbandry chores and make enrichment for the sun bears undergoing rehabilitation before they can be released into the wild.
One of the best things about this programme is that it really benefits the local community. I got immense satisfaction from the knowledge that I had come to Sabah and done a variety of activities that benefitted the local people.
Excellent initiative. Love that I could gift this to low-waste-practicing friends and family for Christmas/birthdays and help conserve our precious rainforests at the same time. Very responsive and kept me posted on timeline from point of purchase until the trees were planted. Thank you, APE Malaysia.
Out of all my experiences last year, when people ask me what I would like to see again… I always say our trees… our little saplings… it’s one of those ‘before I die’ things… I want to see a wild orangutan in our trees!!!!!
“Each individual matters. If you wish to contribute a bit of goodness to wildlife and want to know more about sun bears, here’s definitely the place for it.”
“It’s very difficult to put into words how strongly I feel about this program. Every time we go out into the field to do some physical work for a few hours, it gives me a sense of empowerment. It feels really good to spring into action, connect with nature, learn about conservation and return home with a much better understanding of how it all works.”
Through this project, I get to know a lot of new people and also knowledge about the wildlife. The environment there is also really good for me and I had a lot of good memories with everyone and everything!
I can confirm that it has been the most amazing and rewarding experience of my life. I have never done anything like this and was scared that I wouldn’t be physically able to but everyone quickly made me feel less worried and comfortable.
Experiencing the outstanding beauty of both the wildlife and rainforest will stay with me forever.
My usual cynicism has been expelled and I feel we are contributing in a small way to the restoration of the “corridor of life”. A more sustainable balance between men and the environment.
“Great project. Unlike many other ‘volunteer’ experiences, the work we do here actually matters and actually makes a difference – volunteers feel useful! The staff, ALL the staff, are amazing, so dedicated and hardworking that really care about the bears. But they all still have fun and always so happy to help out and make us feel welcome. The centre is itself is just incredible. Feel so privileged to have been a part of it.”
“We thoroughly enjoyed helping connect the broken fragments of Borneo rain forest desperately needed by the orangutan, sun bear, clouded leopard as well as other important animal and plant species by planting flowering mega-trees which the support the regeneration of this ancient rain forest. It feels wonderful to partake in such an important component of human existence and responsibility”
I bought 3 trees to be planted in honour of a little baby boy’s birth. Not only did I get a fab certificate, but I also got photos, the GPS details of where the trees are planted and the type of trees that were planted. For 60 ringgit, I was able to plant 3 trees, give an incredibly personal gift to a newborn, which will grow with him for the rest of his life and get the satisfaction of having helped Mother Earth cope a little better with the eccentricities of humanity. Thanks APE Malaysia for what you do!
