APE Malaysia Project Coordinators are the face to the company and are the most important representation of the company’s beliefs and goals.  Our Project Coordinators exude energy and confidence in the Facilitation and Management of volunteers and students.  In their own gentle and firm approach, they motivate and encourage positive change and personal impact among their peers and participants.

The job is a demanding and fulfilling one as it combines the challenges of working to improve animal welfare with environmental conservation, of teaching complex environmental concepts with the excitement of doing the teaching in the unique outdoors of Borneo. The job requires helping volnteers and students connect with endangered species (mainly orangutans and sun bears), local communities and threatened habitats. 

The Project Coordinator will be based at particular projet sites and may be required to move sites or accompany international school students on trips to projects sites.  The Project Coordinator will be expected to facilitate the delivery of conservation outcomes as well as learning outcomes using well planned activities, research, scientific protocols, data analysis, presentations and discussions.

The Project Coordinator is required to:

  • Plan, execute, lead, organise and market volunteer projects;
  • Lead volunteers on projects;
  • Facilitate the delivery of environmental education and conservation principles through coordinated planning and researched methods;
  • Develop APE Malaysia projects to contribute positively towards animal welfare, community development and environmental conservation.

A Project Coordinator's Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate, train and guide volunteers from all over the world in meeting project targets;
  • Organise and ensure execution of project by focusing on achieving project objectives;
  • Liaise, cooperate and develop good working relationship with partner organisations on all working levels;
  • Liaise with Head Coordinator and/or Project Manager on project development, delivery and challenges;
  • Monitor and evaluate projects, suggest improvements and develop better strategies for project delivery;
  • Organise, execute and support administrative requirements, reporting and marketing activities.
  • Ensure Health and Safety protocols are met.

Applicants for this position must have the following:

  • University Degree: Education, Zoology, Environmental Studies, Conservation Sciences degree an advantage;
  • Excellent people person: sociable, patient, good negotiating skills;
  • High levels of initiative and passion to work with wildlife in captivity to improve animal welfare conditions;
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Malay;
  • Sharp facilitation and leadership skills and passion for animals, people and environmental conservation;
  • Exceptional initiative in work and project development, to come up with new and novel ideas, develop plans to put them into action and to see it through to the end achieving set targets;
  • Ability to develop manuals and booklets;
  • Experience of working with students/volunteers an advantage;
  • Familiarity with pedagogical techniques, working with students on environmental education a distinct advantage.

Internship Opportunities

Interns will be based in Petaling Jaya and may need to travel with us on programs in Peninsular Malaysia. The minimum internship period is 3 months.  Please send in your application for an interview.

1. Operations Intern

Key roles:

  • Support program operations: planning, logistics, coordination
  • Communicating with volunteers, partners and agents via email and phone
  • Preparing and sourcing materials for animal welfare and environmental education programmes
  • Preparing presentations, reports and handouts
  • Social media & website: creating and updating content; updating our followers on our projects and campaigns;
  • Supporting administration duties

Applicants should be:

  • Interested in Malaysian wildlife and animal welfare
  • Flexible, eager to learn and a team player
  • Well-organized and responsible
  • Ideally, be pursuing or possess a degree related to conservation, wildlife management or zoology.
  • Good communication skills in English and Malay.
  • Skilled at Microsoft Office, Gmail, Facebook.
  • Experience in photography, video editing, website development and graphic design is a strong plus.

2. Social Enterprise Intern

With support from the Air Asia Foundation, APE Malaysia is pioneering a unique range of pet toys from recycled materials. These proceeds will fund our wildlife welfare work in ASEAN.   

Key roles:

  • Support  project leader according to business plan
  • Establishing pilot production: developing a production process, building up production team, managing quality control
  • Evaluate and innovate our product design and business strategy
  • Expand marketing strategy in line with APE’s vision
  • Outreach to target audience (animal lovers) via social media: sharing updates and promoting products
  • Develop webstore/e-commerce on APE’s website    

Applicants should be:

  • Passionate about the role social enterprises can play in addressing environmental problems
  • Pursuing a degree in business/engineering/product design or have experience with start-ups/social enterprises
  • Good communication skills in English and Malay.
  • Good leadership and time management skills
  • Positive attitude, resourceful and responsible. Independent.  
  • Share APE’s vision and values. Love animals.

3. Marketing & Mass Communications Intern

The intern is required to:

  • Be the voice of our social media community to keep our past volunteers & students updated on the impact of their contributions;
  • Find ways to reach out to potential volunteers and student groups through social media;
  • Design new merchandise to spread the word about environmental conservation;
  • Design and publish our newsletter that goes out to our partners, past volunteers and past school groups every year.

Applicants must have the following:

  • Candidate must possess or currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Art/Design/Creative Multimedia, Mass Communications, Advertising/Media or equivalent;
  • Required skills: MS Excel, MS Word, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator;
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Malay.
